Burly Stone: The Stories of Our Soaps, 2/10: The Chef

October 15, 2015

This is the second in a series where I go into some detail about each of our soaps. I’ll talk about the thinking behind it, about the package design & hang tag quotes. This time out, we’re covering “The Chef”. We’re going alphabetically, for those of you keeping score; so if you want to hear about “The Yard Master” you’ll have to be patient.

The Chef

The Chef was one of the first soaps we knew we wanted to make, since we’re a food loving crew. But after that, it took a fair amount of experimenting to come up with something that we were happy with. We didn’t want it to be gimmicky (we want ALL of our soaps to be ones that folks will enjoy using), so finding something that was foodie related but not too girly took a little work.

For scent we settled on a combination of citrus, a smoked earl gray tea, and some saffron. The look was much easier – since I married an Italian, it was only natural that we use a modified Italian flag as the color inspiration. And since we try to make each soap a little special somehow, we put fresh citrus zest in too.

For the packaging, I didn’t want to get too literal, so when I found a design that reminded me of the holes in a colander (you know, a strainer) it felt right. And finding the quotes to go on the back of the hang tag was (as always) a hell of a lot of fun. Here’s the full lineup:

Burly Stone Chef Quotes

It was really interesting to me to see the wide variety of great quotes I found, everything from world famous chefs to authors, and more. My personal favorite? Probably the one by Federico Fellini - "Life is a combination of magic and pasta." It's such a freaking elegant statement - and true!

Well, there you have it. A little bit about "The Chef". Next time we'll be covering our best seller, "The Dude". And let me tell you, there are some funny freaking quotes tucked in there.

Hey, did you know there's a Burly Stone Newsletter? You can stay up-to-date with all the stuff we've got going on. We're trying to get on a regular biweekly schedule for it... no spam, no cat memes, just some info about what's happening, where we'll be, maybe sales & such. We also have a cool PDF called "The Burly Guy's Guide To Life" and its our gift to you for signing up.

Until next time folks, Be Burly!
